...and boy, are my arms tired!

They say if only one person is traveling a long distance, it's cheaper to fly than to drive. So I calculated that the last time I drove to NYC, I used 5 tanks of gas, $50 each, at $3 a gallon. Gas is now around $4 a gallon, but thanks to some serious car maintenance, my range has gone from 310 miles per tank to 365 miles per tank. Add an overnight stay on the way, plus meals. But a taxi ride from the airport will be as much as a motel on the road, and airport food would be as much as several grocery stops on the road. Plus I'd still have to drive 100 miles to an airport from home. OK, how much is a plane ticket? Wow! I may have saved some money if I'd booked a month earlier, but as it is, it's still $200 cheaper to drive. Good thing, too, because last night's downpour delayed flights for hours. I managed to keep going through the downpour. And I have plenty to rant about directions from MapQuest, Google Maps, and Yahoo when I get the time. Anyway, I finally figured out how to make wifi work, so I thought I'd check in before I attend a blogger conference. This is the only picture I've taken so far... I've seen three of these "everything is 99 cents or more!" stores so far. Maybe every store should just use the same name.

Unexplained Disappearances

People vanish all the time, and we usually find out what happened to them eventually. Usually, not always. Jimmy Hoffa and Amelia Earhart are the most famous unsolved missing persons cases in the modern era. But there are many others who left us with far more questions than answers. Here are six you may not be familiar with.

Comfortable Underwear

When my wife had to rush to the hospital unexpectedly, she asked me to bring her a few items from home.

One item on the list was “comfortable underwear.” Worried I’d make the wrong choice, I asked,
“How will I know which ones to pick?”

“Hold them up and imagine them on me,” she said. “If you smile, put them back.”

(Thanks, Rich!)

If you'd prefer something a little less comfortable, but still useful, check out A Look at Modern Underwear. Danged if I can make heads or tails out of it.

Burial at Sea

Bubbles and Barbie, two blonde sisters had promised their Uncle, who had been a seafaring gentleman all his life, to bury him at sea when he died. Of course, in due time, he did pass away and the two blondes kept their promise. They set off from Clearwater Beach with their uncle all stitched up in a burial bag and loaded onto their rowboat.

After a while Bubbles says, ‘Do you think we’re out far enough, Barbie?” Barbie slipped over the side and finding the water only knee deep said, “Nope, not yet Bubbles.”

So they row a little farther…. Again Bubbles asks Barbie, “Do you think we’re out far enough now?”

Once again Barbie slips over the side and almost immediately says, “No, this will never do. The water is only up to my chest.”

So on they row and row and row, and finally Barbie slips over the side and disappears. Quite a bit of time goes by and poor Bubbles is really getting worried when suddenly Barbie breaks the surface, gasping for breath she says, “OK, it’s finally deep enough. Hand me the shovel.

(Thanks, Rich!)

Road Trip!

As you can see, the love has faded. So of course, since I've never heard of mail order, I'll have to run up to the city to get a new supply of t-shirts. I don't know whether I'll be able to post, but I'll give it a try. I have some fun stuff planned for you for the next few days, but there are still a few Squarespace bugs to work out (support has really been working hard on it), so things may look a bit weird around here for the next few days. I'll return to a somewhat normal regimen on Monday. I hope.
