Snowman

Why do they teach us that the winter months are December, January, and February when winter doesn't officially start til almost Christmas, and the real snow season is February and half of March? I've seen more snow in the last week than in the previous three months!

Lots of snowman cartooons out there. Snowmen make great subjects, because they can be emotional and animated but never have their feelings hurt since they are downright frigid. My kids and I make at least one snowman a year. I've found that a two-foot tall snowman is just as valid as a life size snowman. We always have a camera ready when constructing snow sculpture, because our dog will attack a snowman long before she attacks an intruder. Come to think of it, maybe that's why the kids prefer snow angels.

The master of snow humor is Bill Watterson, who authored the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. Calvin used snow sculpture to express his anger and angst, as you can see in this Calvin and Hobbes snow art gallery.

Now see a flicker set of a guy making his own Calvin and Hobbes snowman. There's a bigger set of real world Calvin and Hobbes snowmen here.

Catch a falling snowflake... it may be someone you know! (Thanks, Tracey!)

Nice photos of snowflake crystals.

Make your own virtual (paper) snowflake.

Snowball fight game.

Build your own virtual snowman (very simple, for young kids). You might also like Ben and Jerry's virtual snowman. This one's pretty funny.

Ice and Snow World in Harbin, China. Now this is awesome. Makes me want to take a vacation!

All I Need to Know I Learned From a Snowman (Thanks, Del!)

It's okay if you're a little bottom heavy.
Hold your ground, even when the heat is on.
Wearing white is always appropriate.
Winter is the best of the four seasons.
It takes a few extra rolls to make a good midsection.
There's nothing better than a foul weather friend.
The key to life is to be a jolly, happy soul.
We're all made up of mostly water.
You know you've made it when they write a song about you.
Accessorize! Accessorize! Accessorize!.
Avoid yellow snow.
Don't get too much sun.
It's fun to hang out in your front yard.
There's no stopping you once you're on a roll.

TOP TEN SNOWMEN
10. Jack Frost. I don't understand why this one has ANY popularity.

9. Those awful Christmas inflatables.

8. The Snowman by Raymond Briggs.

7. Rice Krispy snowman. (more edible snowmen here )

6. Bumble, from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

5. The Abominable Snowman, or Yeti. You can talk to him here.

4. Sam the Snowman, also from Rudolph.

3. Calvin and Hobbes snowmen.

2. Frosty the Snowman.

1. The one you build yourself.

Special THANKS to Kenny, Dawn, Kip, Eva, and Wendy, who all sent me the same great batch of snowman comics.

Thought for today: Watch out where the huskies go, don't you eat that yellow snow. -Frank Zappa

That's why they need to keep hair dryers away from hare's. (Ok maybe I'm not as clever as I think I am.

I don't bother with snowpersons of dubious antecedence and frigid personalities anymore; I construct snow mountains of dubious antecedence and little chance of erupting, like Mt. Snowphfffft, which was born on December 21, 2006. Up to about 8' high at it's height, it's now down to about 10" and shrinking fast.

I was just looking at that Calvin and Hobbes series the other day in one of the books. Dozens and dozens of them, each one a tad sicker than the one before.

If a snowman needs to get fixed, does he have his snowballs removed?

I see there are lots of snowmen, but very few snowwomen. So to be fair I went to Youtube looking for more snowwomen. This is what they had to offer; first there was Snowjob, http://youtube.com/watch?v=Dx9CH_Pnspc the kind of true to life snow art that is really (not) for children, and a big ugly snow woman that is safe for most to view. http://youtube.com/watch?v=kCKHT_wn0_0&mode=related&search= I once made a Dolly Parton snowwoman, poor thing; when the warm sun came out, her big titties were the first to fall off. It is a lot of extra work to make a good woman. Maybe that is why God made Adam first.

In my neighbourhood, snowmen are often a welcome sign. If the snow is sticky enough and the temps are warm enough to make a snowman.. it must be spring. :-)
